New Year’s Eve Self Photoshoot
Being a Documentary Family Photographer and not being able to be part of my own family pictures is hard. Sometime in December I was listening to “This is Reportage Podcast” and the photographer (Nina Tberg - thank you for the idea) on the episode I was listening to, mentioned that on a special occasion she sets her camera on a tripod, selects interval shooting and this way she gets to be in the family pictures and I was like “Yup, this is it, this is what I want!” I have no idea how I haven’t came across interval shooting until now, but hey it’s never too late, right?
So, this New Year’s Eve (now its last year actually by the time I am writing this) we decided to stay in our home in Japan, have a small dinner, do some karaoke and just hang out on the sofa - and I thought that it will be a great opportunity for an interval shooting! I grabbed the tripod, dusted it off :) mount the camera on it, played with the settings a bit and set the interval shooting on 30 seconds. As we moved around the house I did moved the tripod along with us.
We cooked some dinner, hang out in the kitchen, decorated the living room with some balloons, did karaoke, watched Taylor Swift’s concert and ate some ice cream - right from the box. It was probably my most favourite New Year’s Eve that I can remember. We did not had to dress fancy, or put make up, or behave :) … we were just ourselves, enjoying in the warmth of our home while my camera was working hard.
The next day, I looked at the pictures and I loved them. They were spontaneous, raw, and real, as I love them. And the best thing about it, I was in them. So if you are trying to figure out, how to be in the pictures (and you live outside of Japan and can’t hire me :) ), take out the old dusty tripod, mount your camera and set the interval shooting - your future self will be grateful for this.
